During the long periods of lockdown, the St Mary’s ringers rang ‘online’ every Friday evening. ‘Ringing Room’ is a virtual belltower which was devised by two ringers in the USA at the beginning of the pandemic so that ringers could continue to ring with one another even when socially distanced! Many, many bands all over the world did the same – some ringers even rang with others in different continents!!
We ‘rang’ on Ringing Room and were able to see each other on Zoom at the same time.
We could choose how many bells we needed – tower bells or handbells – and which ‘method’ we wanted to ring on the keyboard. We heard the bells and saw them move remotely. It was a wonderful way of keeping in touch with each other whilst enjoying the challenge of ringing different ‘methods’ (e.g. Plain Bob Doubles’, ‘Grandsire Triples’) on a keyboard.
At St Mary’s, we returned back in our tower, for real, on Friday 4th June 2021 with renewed enthusiasm, only to find that it was quite difficult putting our newly acquired skill of ringing more complicated ‘methods’ into practice!
Our new learner, Janine, who had only had one bell handling lesson before lockdown, acquired much information on the end of a ‘Ringing Room’ rope. After a few more lessons in the summer, she is now a very valued member of our band.
