The St Mary’s ringers have rung before the 9.30am Family Eucharist every Sunday throughout the year. We also very much enjoy our Friday evenings in the belfry and we are all making progress in ringing methods. Special thanks go to our ringing friends from other local churches who regularly come and support us.
The dedication of our bells took place on October 2nd 1994. So early in October we had a wonderful celebration to mark 25 years of ringing at St Mary’s. A peal of Cambridge Surprise Major was rung to mark the occasion (the same as rung 25 years ago!) This took 3 hours and 3 minutes of continuous ringing. One ringer rang in both peals! A peal board has been made to celebrate the occasion which we have proudly hung on the wall in the belfry – our fourth peal board.
Many years ago, Ross Weddell learnt to ring at St Mary’s aged 11 and went on to become our Ringing Master. After university he moved to work in Yorkshire. So, we were especially delighted that he travelled down to ring in the peal.
We all enjoyed a spectacular cake lovingly made by Milica especially for the occasion with eight handmade bells on top complete with headstocks and tiny clappers.
On 14th October we welcomed our new vicar, Trevor Mapstone and his family, and rang at his joyous Induction service. He has already visited the belfry!
Two of our band have recently moved away to Sussex. At the beginning of 2020 we had a very successful recruiting campaign and look forward to having some new faces in the belfry!
